  1. A mystical movement of Islam which originated
  2. in the 8th century. Sufis believe that deep
  3. intuition is the only real guide to
  4. knowledge. The movement has a strong strain
  5. of asceticism. The name derives from the suf,
  6. a rough woollen robe worn as an indication of
  7. disregard for material things. There are a
  8. number of groups or brotherhoods within
  9. Sufism, each with its own method of
  10. meditative practice, one of which is the
  11. whirling dance of the dervishes.
